Overview

PuTTY is a free software application for Windows 95, 98, XP, Vista, 7, 8, ad 10 which can be used to make an SSH connection to your server. You can download the application at http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html.

Login credentials

In order to connect to your server using SSH, you will need the following information:

PLACEHOLDERS:
In this example, we will be using the placeholders "example.com" and "s00000.gridserver.com". Please be sure to change this to your actual Server Administrator username and access domain.

PRESS ENTER:
It standard to hit "Enter/Return" after each command, to execute it after you finish typing.

  1. After installing Putty, open the application.
  2. Input your connection settings, and then select Open:

    • Host Name: example.com OR s00000.gridserver.com
    • Port: 22 (leave as default)
    • Connection Type: SSH (leave as default)
  3. If this is your first time Instructions from this computer, you will see the following output. Accept the connection by selecting Accept.

  4. Once the SSH Connection is open, type your Server Administrator Username:
    login as: example.com
  5. When prompted, type your password. You will NOT see your cursor moving, or any characters typed (such as ******), when typing your password. This is a standard Putty security feature.

You should now be logged into your server using SSH. You can begin typing commands at the prompt.
