The uControl panel is a tool for individual email accounts on the Grid. It provides email users with a central place to edit various settings for their specific email names. This feature allows the Administrator or Owner of the account to give their users more privacy by enabling them to manage their own password, set up auto-reply messages, and manage anti-spam settings.
This article will help both the Account Owner and individual email users, and should serve as a resource to use when first using uControl, and as a reference material for the future.
uControl can be accessed by pointing your browser URL to your domain at http://gs-example.com/ucontrol/. Make sure to replace gs-example.com with your own domain name.

The login page instructs you to input your email address and your password. You must supply your full email address on this page.
The Overview page is the first screen you will see. From this page, you can quickly and easily access all of the functions of uControl. Included on this page are also quick links to articles that guide users through setting up their email account on most common email client programs. From the Overview page, you can also go directly to your Webmail interface by clicking on the "Webmail Login" icon.
Auto-Reply is one of the features included in uControl. From this section, you are able to enable/disable this feature. You can specify a custom auto-reply message and subject line. A live preview box displays your message alongside the input boxes.
Enabling an auto-reply can potentially result in more spam messages coming to your Inbox, as well as cryptic bounce-back messages. The reason this happens is because the Auto-Reply function will reply to each and every email that gets sent to your email address, regardless of your anti-spam settings. If you notice a sudden increase in bounce messages, rest assured that it's not something to be concerned about.
MailProtect is (mt) Media Temple's product for Anti-Spam. It is a server-side spam filtering technology available for use with every Grid email account. By default, your email account will use the Global settings that have been configured by the Administrator or Owner of the Grid. On this menu, you are able to choose between using Global settings, Custom settings, or disabling MailProtect entirely.
There are also several delivery options, which determine the way MailProtect will treat incoming messages that have been marked as spam. These options are:
Move spam into IMAP subfolder.
This setting will automatically move all spam messages into an IMAP subfolder of your email account. The new folder will be created once you receive at least one spam message after making this setting. The IMAP folder can be accessed through webmail, and through an email client program that has been configured to connect through IMAP. If you are using POP3 on an email program you use on your computer, you will not be able to see this folder.
Add tag to the spam's subject.
This setting will append a prefix to the subject line of messages that are marked as Spam. All mail will still be delivered to your Inbox and can be accessed through Webmail, IMAP, or POP3. This setting is useful if you would rather have all of your messages in one box, or prefer to use a client-side filter to organize your messages.
This setting will delete any spam messages permanently. Only use this setting if you are aware that you can potentially lose legitimate email due to false positives. If you do use this setting, it is strongly recommended to properly set up your "Allow list" as needed.
MailProtect will still scan the emails and apply a spam score in the mail headers themselves, but will not modify or move any messages. This is useful if you would rather have a client-side program to filter your messages based off the spam score provided in the headers. Rules set by entries in the "Allow/Block list" are still honored.
The MailProtect area also includes a simple to use "Spam Score" slider bar. You may adjust the sensitivity of MailProtect by modifying the minimum spam score needed for a message to be considered spam. The default setting is 5. Increasing this value higher means the system will be less restrictive with email, resulting in potentially more spam, but less likelihood of a legitimate message being marked as spam. Likewise, lowering this value to below 5 will enforce more stringent filtering and will catch more spam, at the cost of a higher chance for legitimate messages to be marked as spam as well. It is recommended to experiment with this parameter until you find the right level for your particular usage. Utilizing a lower minimum spam score with a properly set up "Allow list" may give you better results.
The "Allow/Block list" gives you the chance to specify individual email addresses or entire domains to either always accept mail from or to always reject mail from. This feature allows you to take advantage of the effective spam filtering technology provided by MailProtect, while also allowing you to "make sure" that certain emails will always come through. If a global Allow/Block list has been set up by the account Owner or Administrator, you have the option to view these lists or directly import them. This is only necessary when in the "Custom Settings" mode.
Changing your password
This menu allows you to change the password for your email account. For security, you will need to input your current password. A convenient password strength tester allows you to see if the password you have chosen to use is at risk of being guessed or brute-forced. Paying close attention to the "Password tip" help bubble on this page will give you some guidance on how to create better passwords. If all else fails, using a random password generator is always a safe way to go. You can find many websites that offer a random password generator, so you may want to use your favorite search engine to locate and use one to create stronger passwords.
