Overview

The (mt) Media Temple Security panel allows you to monitor the status of your domains. The panel shows the results for three separate scan types. Malware, vulnerabilities and spam. The sections below provide more information on enabling the security panel for a domain, accessing security information, and understanding the results from your security scans.

Viewing the status of your site's security

At a glance

You can see the status alerts of your malware, vulnerability and spam scans in the Security panel in your Overview screen. As soon as an issue is found by our security scan, this panel will alert you by updating your security status here. The different statuses will be color coded depending on the severity of the issue.

A green status icon indicates the scan did not return any issues.
An orange status icon indicates a minor security issue has been found and needs to be resolved.
A red status icon indicates a serious security issue exists and needs to be resolved.

Keep in mind that these security scans are not 'live' scans. The malware scan is performed daily, and the vulnerability and spam scans are performed on a weekly basis. This means that once an issue has been found in a scan, it will be displayed as an existing issue until the issue is resolved and the scan is run again.

Issue types

Malware

The malware scan will search for any known viruses, spyware, identity theft scams, etc. and will alert you if such is found. It is important to resolve these types of issues as soon as possible. If your site contains any of these types of malware, it could become publicly listed as a site that contains malware. If this happens, many browsers and/or search engines can 'black-list' the site. This means people attempting to visit your site will not be able to see it in search results, or it may be flagged as a site that contains malicious content. To resolve malware issues and avoid these types of issues, you will need to remove any malicious links, viruses or spyware that may be present.

Vulnerabilities

Vulnerabilities are weaknesses within the site itself. A vulnerability can lead to a much larger issue, such as malware being injected into your site. The vulnerability scan will search for any issues within the site and notify you to help you identify these weaknesses before they become a bigger problem.

Spam

The spam scan will notify you if your domain is sending or is referenced in any spam email. If your domain is determined to be sending spam and is publicly 'blacklisted', many email programs will ignore or classify emails from your site as spam. This can prevent any intended recipient to not receive email from you. If your domain becomes 'blacklisted', you will need to be removed from these blacklists.

Using filters

Just knowing an issue exists is only the first step. The Security panel also will allow you to see a filtered view where more detail can be found for any security issue that it finds. This can be very helpful when you need to identify and resolve a specific security issue.

  1. To access more information for all of your security issue, click on View all issues in the Security panel.
    viewall
This will take you to a new screen where you will be able to view all of your security issues and filter them by malware, vulnerability or spam.
  2.  To filter your results, select the status type, issue type, or domain that you wish to filter by from the drop down menus.
    filters
  3. To see more information about a specific issue alert, click on the Details button to the right of the issue.
    filter_with_issue
  4. Here, you can find additional information on the security issue that was found. Which can be helpful when trying to resolve an issue.
