Using the Monitoring Panel in the Account Center

The Media Temple Monitoring panel allows you to monitor the response time, activity and resource utilization on up to 5 of your domains. The sections below provide more information on enabling monitoring on a domain, accessing server statistical data, and understanding the data provided.

Adding a domain in the Monitoring panel

You can enable monitoring on multiple domains, however you must add each domain in your Monitoring panel before any statistical data will be recorded and available for viewing. You may use the steps listed below to enable monitoring on your domain.

  1. Log in to your Account Center.
  2. Navigate to the Overview Page. 
  3. Here, you will find the Monitoring panel. It will look similar to this.
  4. To add a domain to be monitored, click on the cog icon in the Monitoring panel.
  5. Type the domain name in the field provided and click the + button.
  6. That's it! Your domain will now be monitored.

When your domain has been added, you will be able to see basic response time statistics for your domain right in your Overview page. This Response Time monitor accesses your site from an external source and provides the average time it took to access your server. This tool proves you a quick and easy overview of your site’s availability and performance for the past hour.

Keep in mind that this tool only shows the statistics for one domain at a time. To view another domain you have added to the Monitoring panel, simply select it from the drop down menu.

Accessing the Monitoring reports

(mt) Media Temple’s monitoring also allows you access to a number of additional statistical graphs on a dedicated Monitoring reports page that details everything from Uptime to resource utilization.

  1. Navigate to the Overview page in the Account Center.
  2. Select the domain you wish to view statistics for from the drop down menu.
  3. Click on See all monitoring reports.

Server status alerts and notifications

To the left of your Monitoring page you will have the Server Status panel. It allows you to see alerts when your site becomes unavailable or when you're getting close to your server resources allocation limit.

In this panel, you can see additional details for any alert by clicking on See issue history.

You can also set up email notification so that you or a contact is notified by email of this alert as well. To do this, click on Edit issue alerts. Then, enter the information for the contact that you wish to send notifications to and click CREATE CONTACT.

Your statistical graphs

In the Monitoring page, you have a number of different graphs that will display statistics gathered over time from your site. These are as follows:

  • Percentage of disk used
    This graph displays the percentage of disk space utilization over time.
  • RAM percent usage
    This graph displays the percentage of disk space utilization over time.
  • CPU utilization percentage
    This graph displays the percentage of CPU utilization over time.
  • Number of processes running
    This graph displays the number of processes running.

You can choose to view the data in an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly view for any of your domains. Just select any of your desired options from the drop down at the top of the Monitoring page.

Once this is done, the statistical information in the graphs below will display the data you’ve selected. On the graphs you will see a number of plotted points. If you hover your cursor over one of these points it will provide data specific to that point on the timeline.
You can also use your cursor to zoom in on a specific section by clicking in the graph and dragging across a portion of the timeline. This will narrow the graphs statistical data to show only the time that you have selected. To exit this view for a graph, click on the Reset zoom button that will have appeared.

Removing a domain from Monitoring

The steps below will detail how to remove a domain from the Monitoring panel. Please be aware that all statistical data will be removed for any domain that is removed from the panel.

  1. Navigate to the Overview page in the Account Center.
  2. Click on the cog icon in the Monitoring panel.
  3. Click on Remove to the right of the domain you wish to remove.
  4. Your domain is now removed from monitoring.
