Choosing A DV Service

Which VPS product is right for me: DV, DV Developer, or Managed Hosting?

  • Select DV Developer if you are an experienced server administrator, familiar with Linux, completely comfortable working with the command line interface, and want the freedom that comes with building your system from the ground up.
  • Select DV if you are looking for an “out of the box” VPS solution. It comes pre-installed with your choice of either Parallels® Plesk Panel or cPanel® to help administer your environment.
  • Select Managed Hosting if you are new to server management and require help along the way, or you just don’t want to spend your time managing your server.

How is DV different from a DV Developer?

There are four essential feature differences:

  • DV Developer is a minimal install without a web-based control panel. Linux command line skills are required to manage a DV Developer.
  • LAMP & Control Panel — DV includes an up-to-date LAMP stack and either the Parallels® Plesk Panel or cPanel®.
  • Disk Space—DV has up to 50% more disk space.
  • OS Choice—DV is provisioned with CentOS. The DV Developer server offers the choice of Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, or CentOS operating systems.

How is DV different from a Dedicated Server?

DV Dedicated is configured exactly like the DV or DV Developer except that it hosts only one customer. Each DV Dedicated is a single-tenant box with 64GB of RAM and all resources on the box are allocated to you. If you need a high performance server with total resource allocation, DV Dedicated is the solution.

How is a DV service different from a physical dedicated server?

A DV delivers performance comparable to a dedicated server, plus additional capabilities due to virtualization, making it more cost-effective. The Power Panel included with each DV allows you to stop, start, and reboot your server directly through your web browser. Using the optional Snapshot Backup add-on before performing delicate system administration tasks allows you to instantly revert back to your snapshot if your changes do not work out. The Power Panel also allows you to automatically re-provision your DV server to the state it originally came in at anytime. If you are a developer, you can also access many of these features through our API.

How are DV & DV Developer different from shared hosting?

On DV, resources are isolated from everyone else on the server. You also get additional ability to burst beyond your guaranteed resources. This design ensures you never have to worry about other customers impacting the performance of your web applications.

In a shared hosting environment, your websites constantly compete with hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of other customers' websites for the same pool of server resources. Shared hosting environments have some limits on your ability to customize server software and install new applications. With a DV, you have access to the root level, so you can customize existing applications and install new ones at anytime.

Contact our Sales Team, who can help explain the differences in more detail and help you decide which solution is best for your needs.

Is the DV Developer considered a "Cloud Server"?

Some hosting companies might call it one, but we don't like to get caught up with buzzwords. We think of it as a very scalable, high-performance VPS (virtual private server).

I cannot decide between DV, DV Developer, and DV Dedicated. Who can help me?

Our Sales Team can explain the differences and help you decide which solution is best for your needs.

Upgrades & Migrations

How easy is it to upgrade or downgrade my DV plan?

It’s incredibly easy. Feel free to start small and grow big, or the other way around. Regardless of your service level, integrated account controls and instant provisioning give you the power to choose the level of resources you need, and the freedom to change your mind. Once you have a DV account, just visit your AccountCenter to make any changes.

Can I upgrade my DV server without a migration?

We like to reserve extra resources on each host machine. In almost all cases, we can accommodate upgrades without a migration. In rare cases when a migration may be necessary, automation will be used to minimize downtime.

Can I migrate from DV Developer to DV?

Yes, you are more than welcome to migrate to a DV Developer server. However, we currently do not offer migration tools. You will be responsible for migrating your content, including email and databases.

Will (mt) Media Temple migrate my service?

Yes, our premium migration service is called CloudTech, and it is available as an add-on to your (mt) account. CloudTech migration specialists can move your sites, domains, and applications to (mt) for you--it is fast, easy, and we do all the work. Other premium managed care services such as on-demand server tuning and on-call hosting support may also be available. See our CloudTech page for more information and ordering instructions.

In addition, some articles published in our KnowledgeBase can help you make decisions before starting a migration, and for reference during and after. We also encourage you to consult with helpful and capable members of the community via the (mt) Forums.

How can I add more resources to my DV?

Scale your DV with the touch of a button, without any complicated migrations. Automated, 24/7/365 upgrades are just a few clicks away in your AccountCenter, with most upgrades occurring instantly with no downtime. Need to scale to a monster, single-tenant box? Go big with DV Dedicated.

AccountCenter offers these options 24/7. You can up-scale DV Developer to the next resource level at any time. Add-on services such as Snapshot Backups, additional IP addresses, or the Plesk license for unlimited domains, are also available.

How long does it take to up-scale to a bigger DV Developer service?

If you have a DV of 4GB or smaller, the up-scale typically happens almost instantaneously. Upscaling from 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB can take a bit longer, as your IP address may change and DNS is involved. Either way, the process is automated and can be initiated via the AccountCenter, which makes it VERY easy to do. Likewise, downscaling is easy and instant.

Can I keep my IP addresses?

IP addresses are not elastic. If you are moving from outside of Media Temple your IP address will change. If you are moving within Media Temple a change of IP address may be required.

Will my DV service remain in the same data center?

DV and DV Developer are provisioned in our northern Virginia data center. If you have questions please contact our Sales team.

How long does migration take?

This is difficult to predict, due to the number of factors involved. Each case will be different. Please see our KnowledgeBase article for a thorough exploration of this subject.

How much does it cost to migrate?

Most migration methods involve the purchase of new DV service while your older DV service also remains open. During this "overlap" period, both services are billable. In the event that file transfer during the migration exceeds your bandwidth allocation, the standard overage rate of $0.15/GB would apply. As always, after the old service is closed, (mt) Media Temple will pro-rate the daily cost and automatically apply any resulting credit to your account.

What might affect DV migration?

We manage networking for you. The only part you need to engage with is the new IP address(es) and DNS TTL settings to expedite the switch-over.

Which versions of server software come pre-installed on DV?

The following software is included on each DV:

  • Parallels® Plesk Panel 12 or cPanel® 14.42
  • CentOS 6 x86_64
  • Apache 2.2
  • MySQL 5.5
  • PHP 5.4
  • Perl 5.10
  • Python 2.6
  • Ruby 1.8
  • Postfix 2.8
  • YUM package management

See our KnowledgeBase for a complete list of installed packages.

What control panel is installed on DV?

DV comes with your choice of the Parallels® Plesk Panel or cPanel®. Both provide an easy-to-use interface and integrated provisioning, billing, and content management system, so you can manage all your server operations in one place. Both allow users to create and maintain domains, databases, email accounts, FTP users, and more. Both also provide access to built-in webmail, statistics, and one-click installers for WordPress, Joomla, PhpBB, Magento and many more web applications.

Which control panel should I choose, Plesk or cPanel?

As described above, both panels offer similar functionality and features. It mostly comes down to a matter of taste. Both panels offer online demos, so you can take a closer look before committing to one or the other.

View the cPanel demo ›

View the Plesk demo ›

Can I choose one and then change my mind later?

Unfortunately, no. Once provisioned with either Plesk or cPanel, a DV service can’t be re-provisioned in place. To change control panels, you would need to start a new DV service and migrate your files to that new service. Our CloudTech Premium Support team offers migration services (for an additional fee).

Is it possible to get a DV service without LAMP or any control panel pre-installed?

Yes, that would be our DV Developer plan. It gives you the additional flexibility of choosing an operating system: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, or CentOS. If you are not sure which plan will work best for you, our Sales Team can help you decide.

What web apps are available with DV?

DV, with either Parallels® Plesk Panel or cPanel®, includes more than 200 useful applications. Each app can be installed directly on your sites with just a few clicks, without the configuration hassles and other complications of traditional software installs. Popular apps include:

  • WordPress

WordPress is a state-of-the-art semantic personal publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability.

  • PinnacleCart

PinnacleCart is a feature-packed PHP shopping cart and website builder application.

  • Drupal

Open source content management system and blogging engine.

  • Joomla

Content management system and web application framework.

Can I get root access to my DV?

Yes. Root access is enabled. For security purposes, we do not send your default password via email. So, you will need to log into the AccountCenter and use the "reset" feature to create a new root password.

Can I install any third-party applications or hosting software I want?

Absolutely. Although (mt) Media Temple cannot assist in the installation of third-party applications, you are free to install and use whatever software you wish, subject to the (mt) Terms of Service.

How do I enable developer tools on DV?

Some developer's tools, such as YUM, are pre-installed on DV. Others can easily be enabled via the "admin" section of the AccountCenter. These are required in order to compile and develop applications using tools such as "make" and "gcc". For a complete listing of the tools installed, see the KnowledgeBase.

What is Parallels Power Panel?

Parallels Power Panel allows you to manage your virtual environments—Containers and virtual machines functionally identical to standalone servers, with their own IP addresses, processes, files, user databases, configuration files, applications, etc.—with the help of any standard Web browser on any platform. You can find more information in the Parallels Power Panel User Guide.

What is virtualization?

Virtualization technology allows the resources of a single physical server to be efficiently divided into multiple, virtual servers, each running their own operating system along with dedicated memory, processor, and storage resources. Virtualization isolates each DV environment so that any issue affecting one DV server will have no impact on neighboring DV servers. It enables us to offer multiple resource levels, so that you select and pay for only the amount that you need. Virtualization also makes it much easier for us to automatically up-scale or down-scale your resource package instantly when you click the button in the AccountCenter or access the scaling method of our API.

DV provides dedicated processor cycles, dedicated memory, and dedicated storage. So you can choose the resources you need, share nothing and control it all. Parallels Containers is the most efficient OS virtualization technology available. You can also keep a close eye on your server's performance with real-time resource statistics including memory, cpu, and network utilization available inside your AccountCenter or from the (mt) API.

Any more benefits of virtualization?

  • Faster support and increased diagnostic capabilities by (mt) Media Temple support technicians.
  • Web-based remote start/stop/reboot capabilities.
  • Granular resource monitoring.
  • Service monitoring with customizable notifications.
  • Rapid up-scale and down-scale of resources.
  • Rescue/emergency maintenance mode features.
  • Detailed bandwidth reporting.
  • Network spike protection.
  • (mt) Media Temple managed kernel upgrades.

What hardware is used on DV Dedicated?

There are no compromises here. Our DV Dedicated services are powered by Hewlett-Packard Proliant DL-Series machines featuring multi-core Intel Xeon processors and high-performance SCSI/SAS disk drives in a RAID-10 configuration. These servers are just plain fast.

What’s so great about the servers you use?

High-grade data center equipment means less maintenance, better reliability, and more uptime. The DV platform lives in our top-tier data centers and is powered by HP server hardware and top-quality networking equipment. Which translates to better connectivity, fewer hardware failures, and a better hosting experience all around.

One common cause of server slowness is slow disk performance. Unlike most utility VPS platforms, our DV servers use only high-speed RAID-10 SAS disks built specifically for data center use. So disk performance won’t cause traffic bottlenecks on your server.

What guidance do you have available to help me get started reselling?

Many (mt) Media Temple customers resell hosting services, so the best place for advice is in the (mt) Forums.

It’s easy to resell (mt) Media Temple hosting on your DV. Your control panel gives you the power to allocate separate resources for each client, run your own private nameservers, and brand the control panel with your company's identity. Provide each client with separate access to their own control panel while you manage all of your clients from one top level view. You can even host as many domains as you want by upgrading to an unlimited Plesk license.

How does DV help me resell hosting services?

  • The main Plesk Control Panel is designed for reselling.
  • Easily create customer accounts and subscriptions.
  • Set restrictions for your customers as needed.
  • Run private nameservers if you wish.
  • Brand the control panels with your logo.
  • Control panel for your customers enforces access restrictions.
  • Use your control panel to set up and manage email accounts.
  • Offer your customers a choice of AtMail or Horde webmail client.
  • Plesk Application Vault or cPanel Application Catalog enables your customers to easily install applications.

How many websites can I host on a single DV?

DV has no restrictions on the number of websites you host on a single service. However, keep in mind that having sufficient resources is also a factor.

To help our customers, we have provided 6 levels of memory, storage, and bandwidth to choose from. So as traffic to your sites increases, you can apply more resources to support them. Please see our DV product page for pricing information.

Are there any licensing restrictions on the number of domains I can host on a single DV?

DV with cPanel has no restrictions on the number of domains supported. DV with Plesk includes a 100-domain license, which can be easily upgraded to an unlimited license from your AccountCenter.

Do Plesk and cPanel include monitoring tools?

Yes, both panels have tools to monitor control panel services and the health of your DV. Visit the Media Temple KnowledgeBase to learn more about monitoring tools for for your selected control panel.

Does (mt) Media Temple provide backup services?

Yes, (mt) Media Temple offers two types of self-managed backup options. Customers using DV Developer & DV can purchase Snapshot Backups as an add-on from Media Temple. This can be done in the AccountCenter. If you need additional help with your backup, please contact Sales to have us set it up for you.

DV customers can also run backups via the Plesk Control Panel to create, schedule, restore, download, and browse per-domain backups. This feature is available at no cost for DV customers.

Am I able to create a backup with Plesk?

Yes. The Plesk backup tool is an excellent tool when used in conjunction with the Snapshot Backups add-on. This tool is recommended to be used for more frequent backups, meaning weekly or even daily. The main purpose of this tool is to have the ability to quickly and easily recover important data for one specific domain without affecting the state of the server overall. The backup utility retains website files, email users/email box contents, and databases. This tool does not backup any server configurations. However, you do have the ability to download the created backups locally, and it offers the option to automatically move the backups to another server via FTP.

NOTE: If the Backup option is greyed out, simply open a support request from the AccountCenter.

What if I somehow break my server and can't access it?

If you have enabled the Snapshot Backup add-on, you may restore from a Snapshot Backup. Also, you may restore from your own backups that may be stored elsewhere. Otherwise you can perform a rebuild of your server via the AccountCenter, which will move everything currently in your server into the /old directory.

What are the charges if I exceed my bandwidth?

If you exceed the bandwidth included with your hosting plan, you will automatically be charged for the overage at the rate of $0.15 per GB. We will alert you in advance via e-mail if our monitoring system projects that you will exceed your bandwidth allocation. You may also view a report of your current and projected bandwidth use during any billing cycle directly inside the AccountCenter.

What is battery-backed write-cache enabler?

It allows for higher reliability and performance for writes. In real-world terms, it can make disk writes ten times faster, and if a system crashes, greatly reduces the likelihood of data corruption.

Will there be a discount if I prepay for a full year?

Yes, if you prepay for the year we will provide a 10% discount.

What forms of payment does (mt) Media Temple accept?

We accept the following payment methods: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, or wire transfer. If you are a US customer, you may also pay by money order or check.

Please let us know if you intend to pay via PayPal, money order, check, or wire transfer so we may email you special instructions. Any payment method requiring special instructions will need to be prepaid for a year.
