Where will my (ve) Server be located? All (ve) Servers are currently provisioned in our Virginia datacenter (VA-IDC4). We will offer (ve) Servers in our Southern California datacenter (EL-EDC3) later this year.
Do you offer backups? Yes, currently we offer a user-initiated Snapshot Backup add-on which can be purchased via the AccountCenter for $20 per snapshot each month. All Snapshot Backups are initiated via the Parallels Power Panel. Later this year, user-scheduled backups will also be offered.
What kind of system monitoring does the (ve) Server offer? Parallels Power Panel provides basic monitoring capability. Feel free to also install your favorite monitoring solution.
Do you offer an API? Yes. For more information about the (mt) API, please click here.
Does (mt) Media Temple offer utility billing? Utility billing is not currently an option.
How many IP addresses come with my (ve) Server? Your (ve) Server is provisioned with 1 IP address. However, you can purchase up to 15 additional IP addresses for a (ve) Server via your AccountCenter.
Do you charge extra for bandwidth? Yes. Although we have allocated generous bandwidth allocations to your server, should you go over this limit, you will be charged at a rate of $0.15/GB.
Is the (ve) Server considered a "Cloud Server"? Most hosting companies would probably call it one, but we don't like to get caught up with buzz words. We think of it as a very scalable high-performance VPS.
Does the (ve) Server offer a control panel? The (ve) Server offers some basic server controls via the AccountCenter and even more via the Parallels Power Panel. You are welcome to install a more comprehensive control panel, such as webmin.
Does bandwidth between (ve) Servers cost anything? There are no bandwidth costs for any data transferred between (ve) Servers provided they are in the same datacenter. At this time, all (ve) Servers are being provisioned in our Virginia datacenter.
How long does it take to provision my server? Your server should be provisioned and available to you within 10 minutes of completing the order.
How do I access my (ve) Server once it has been provisioned? Using SSH, you may connect to the (ve) Server using your access domain or your IP address. This information is always available to you in the AccountCenter or your "Service Activation Letter" email.
What if I somehow break my server and can't access it? If you have enabled the Snapshot Backup add-on, you may restore from a Snapshot Backup. Also, you may restore from your own backups that may be stored elsewhere. Otherwise you can perform a rebuild of your server via the AccountCenter, which will move everything currently in your server into the /old directory.
Do you offer any (ve) Servers with the Microsoft Windows Operating System? No, we currently offer Linux Operating Systems only. At this time, you can install Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and CentOS distributions.
I'm new to server management. Is the (ve) Server for me? Probably not. The (ve) Server is targeted towards power users who are not afraid to get dirty in shell.
Do I get root access to my (ve) Server? Of course! All (ve) Servers come with root access. You can always change/update your root password within the AccountCenter.
Does the (ve) Server include a firewall? Yes, the (ve) Server offers a firewall which you may configure using Parallels Power Panel or via the command-line using tools such as iptables.
Which (mt) product is right for me, (ve) or (dv)? Simply put, choose:
- (ve) Server: If you are an experienced server administrator, familiar with Linux, completely comfortable working with SSH, and you want the total freedom that comes with building your system from the ground up.
- (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server: If you want the power and freedom of a VPS, but would like a working server "out of the box," and prefer to do most of your administration through a Control Panel.
Can I upgrade my (ve) Server without a migration? We like to reserve extra resources on each host machine. In almost all cases, we can accommodate upgrades without a migration. In rare cases when a migration may be necessary, automation will be used to minimize downtime.
Can I migrate from a (dv) Dedicated-Virtual Server to a (ve) Server? Yes, you are more than welcome to migrate to a (ve) Server. However, we currently do not offer any migration tools. You will be responsible for migrating your content, including email and databases.
