The (gs) Grid-Service has two distinct options for MySQL. The default option is the MySQL SmartPool v.2, a new multi-tenant database hosting platform which now features guaranteed memory resources. Architecturally the system has been radically re-designed to function more intelligently than any previous generation of hosted MySQL. The system uses hundreds of large-sized MySQL Containers where a small density of users are installed which allows databases to have room for expansion. SmartPool v.2 also has a "Burst Container" feature which automatically allocates a single tenant container to customers when databases experience short-lived spikes of intense traffic. This allows databases to continue running smoothly, whereas with previous systems there would have been the potential for downtime. The second option for MySQL is the GridContainer which is designed for mission critical applications. This option includes a permanent single-tenant container system with more RAM and also features enhanced database controls and a stated Service Level Agreement.

Unlike previous versions of pool hosting technology, SmartPool v.2 guarantees each Grid customer 64Mb of database memory.
Database Bursting.
When the SmartPool system recognizes sudden spikes in database traffic, it allocates a single-tenant MySQL Container which allows the database to grow beyond its guaranteed resources. This unique feature helps customers survive temporary traffic bursts resulting from press releases, mass blog coverage, DIGG, etc.
One-click upgrade.
When customers traffic demands exceed the limits of the SmartPool, an upgrade to the MySQL GridContainer can be made directly inside the AccountCenter. Our system handles all aspects of the upgrade seamlessly with zero migration burdens.
Hundreds of MySQL servers, fewer users sharing resources.
Rather than making everyone share and compete for resources on a single MySQL database, the SmartPool distributes users amongst a farm of MySQL Container Servers. Using virtualization technology, the SmartPool achieves a low user density per MySQL instance, which minimizes resource competition and improves overall system stability.
Massive server horsepower.
(mt) Media Temple has acquired the newest, most powerful HP Proliant server hardware available in the marketplace for use inside the SmartPool. System engineers have further tuned each machine with special low-level hardware and kernel optimizations specifically designed to maximize system performance of MySQL.
