#GivingTuesday was created as a response to the shopping bonanzas of Black Friday and Cyber Monday as a day to give back to our communities and recognize the generosity of others. Here are some of our favorite charitable organizations from around the world, all of whom happen to host with us. We encourage you to donate if you feel so inspired!
TXT – Teens Exploring Technology (“TXT”) has a bold mission: To utilize technology as a tool to keep South Los Angeles teens in the classroom to pursue a STEM education and encourage entrepreneurship. After-school programs are their specialty, housed in their innovation space in South L.A. called “The Cube,” where student learn how to code, build websites, and develop apps. It’s no surprise that 95% of their students make it into the world of higher education and get the “tech” bug.
GameChanger – Oftentimes, charities emerge from a story of paying it forward. GameChanger is no exception, as Taylor Carol, at a young age, was diagnosed with leukemia and given less than two weeks to live. As weeks slowly turned into years of isolated treatment, Taylor found solace in video games, which helped keep his spirits alive in the five years it took to beat cancer. GameChanger not only provides video game systems and Virtual Reality (VR) experiences for children who are facing life-threatening illnesses, but also grants scholarships to young cancer survivors who want their college dreams to come true.
Boom – Know you want to donate to a charity but unsure how to do so? Boom removes that layer completely by allowing iTunes users to give a chunk of their next purchase to a charity of their choice, at no cost to the user. From the ALS Society to Amnesty International, Boom is a perfect tool to work charitable donations seamlessly into your daily movie, music, television and app purchases.
Give – Have a cause, but not sure how to collect the donations? The Give WordPress plugin is a tailor-made solution, making it easy to raise funds for the charity or cause of your choice by providing slick donation forms into a WordPress site. The plugin comes with some powerful add-ons that allow recurring donations, PDFized receipts, and the ability to dedicate donations (called a “tribute”) as well.
Unity – Music and dance are powerful ways to bring people together. Toronto native Michael Prosserman channelled his love of breakdancing to start the UNITY Charity, which empowers youth to be role models and leaders in their communities through hip hop and dance. Now in its 10th year, UNITY has made a difference for over 100,000 students in Canada and just celebrated their 9th annual Unity Festival, which showcased the best visual art, spoken word, breakdancing and beat boxing by local youth alongside international artists.
Great Western Air Ambulance – The Great Western Air Ambulance takes off every day out of Bristol, England, with one mission: To save local lives. This helicopter service averages five flights a day and lands within 20 minutes to reach people who are inaccessible by road or in such a critical state that they need immediate paramedic or doctor attention at the scene of the accident. Funded entirely by donations, the helicopter flew nearly 1750 missions in 2016 and is expected to reach a similar amount in 2017, directly impacting the lives of Britons every day.
