Meet Media Temple: Justin Crown

Justin Crown’s rise to software engineer followed a path of determination. Starting at Media Temple as a customer support agent several years ago, his desire to learn more about the intricacies of web hosting led to a move to CloudTech, our premier technical support team. Shortly after, he joined the Engineering department, where his technical prowess has been utilized across all Media Temple products.

1: What do you like the most about what you do?
The daily learning. Every day, I tackle a new challenge with some truly incredible coworkers. As a result, I learn something new every day, be it a completely new technology or a new view on something I am already familiar with. This allows me to approach each day with vigor and a fresh perspective, while enriching my life and skill set at the same time.

2: How different is Media Temple compared to any previous companies you worked at?
Media Temple really fosters a fantastic culture. I have never worked for a company that is so concerned about my well-being. Whereas some jobs can feel like you are wasting your life away in a dreary cubicle, Media Temple is like a really cool family that I get to see daily.

3: What was the weirdest job you had?
Actually, my last one: I was a paparazzi. I had no knowledge of photography and it was soon apparent that it was more lucrative to take photos of newer celebrities I hardly knew about. Surprisingly, most of the celebrities I worked with actually understood the value of the hype machine and appreciated my work. It was a very fun job (not as intrusive as everyone assumes) and taught me a lot about being clever, determined, and fearless. I only started to move towards technology when I realized that being a paparazzi wasn’t the challenge I wanted. I would go home and study programming all night after a 12-hour day. Those were really challenging times, but the hard work paid off when I started working at Media Temple.

4: Outside of Media Temple, what do you do in your free time? What’s your hidden creative talent?
While my favorite thing to do is play board games with family and friends (I love Ticket To Ride and Settlers of Catan), I also spend a lot of time playing music. I was a music major in college and worked as a studio musician for many years.

5: If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?
Ultraman. I could enjoy my dinner without worry of monster attacks.

6: Which one of the 5 company values resonates the most with you? Why?
“Work Fearlessly”. I refuse to settle for mediocrity even in the most insignificant aspects of my life. I believe that in order to be the best you can possibly be, you must be unafraid of failure. I live this value every day at work alongside my colleagues, as we constantly explore new and better ways to do things, instead of just settling for something that is good enough. Working fearlessly allows us to truly innovate and is a driving factor for positive change and progress.
