I personally don’t know how it’s possible to be a surfer and not be sensitive to the environment around you.
– Jim Moriarty, CEO, The Surfrider Foundation
Surfrider is a Southern California-based grassroots organization and activist network that’s dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of oceans, waves, and beaches.
Surfrider environmental director Chad Nelson and CEO Jim Moriarty lead volunteers with a passion for beach preservation. One specific strategy Surfrider focuses on is the elimination of beach plastic. Some 80% of the plastic litter found on beaches come from human use on land.
Beyond cleanup, Surfrider protects the beaches themselves. Perhaps the organization’s most notable success was preventing a private road from being built through the middle of Testles State Park in San Diego County.
The Surfrider Foundation now has 80 local chapters throughout the country. Volunteers looking to get involved in actively eradicating beach pollution can follow upcoming Surfrider events via their website.
